Today all the matches were cancelled in Flushing Meadows due to the rainy weather. So, as long as I've nothing better to do (my life is just tennis in this 2 weeks) I'll write my preview of women's quarter-finals.
Starting tomorrow on (instead of today), it's possible to watch interesting matches such as Stosur vs Zvonareva, Wozniacki vs Petkovic or even Serena vs Pavlyuchenkova... or maybe the less interesting, Kerber vs Pennetta, but also a great match, both players are doing a great campaign so far.
My bet: as long as we can't predict Caro's performances in Slams, I'm not sure about her match against Petko. However, I'm rooting for the number 1.
Then, I believe Serena will defeat Pavs in 2 sets; she's been playing too well so far and I believe she gonna win the US Open 2011.
About Sam vs Bepa, I'd prefer Sam for the win but Bepa will probably defeat the australian top-ranked. Sam is being quite inconsistent this season, unlike Bepa.
Then, the surprise quarter-final: Kerber vs Pennetta. Pennetta is the favourite, but she's being awful this season. I mean, before US Open. It gonna be a very interesting match.
About Ana's performance in New York, I can't say it was bad. Pretty good, considering the circumstances. She reached the 2nd week of a Slam for the first time this season, and also the third time in her career - defending her 2010 points. Also, she played quite well against Serena, winning 7 games and having more winners than the north-american - but also more UEs, that's why she lost.
Hope she finishes 2011 ia good shape, in order for starting 2012 very confident and not repeating this awful year.

US Open - 1st week
The first week of the US Open ended yesterday, so today starts the R4 for most of the players - men's will start today, but half of women's started yesterday. In what concerns about me, it really starts today because both Ana and Nole will play today.
First of all, the men's draw. Four non-seeded players have reached the round 4, about 25%. However three of them will probably end their campaigns in this same round - Muller vs Nadal, Young vs Murray and Monaco vs Federer are tough tasks for the non-seeds - and Ferrero has a great challenge against the serbian nº3, Janko Tipsarevic. Then, we have just 6 top-10 players in this round 4 - the 4 favourites and also Ferrer and Fish. In fact, I believe the greatest matches of this R4 are Ferrer vs Roddick and Tsonga vs Fish. I bet in both americans.
Another important stat: four americans have reached the last 16. Isner and Young will probably be defeated (play against Simon and Murray), but A-Rod and Fish can truly go through.

About women's, there is one important stat: no women have reached the 2nd week of all Slams this year. Victoria Azarenka did it in Australia, Paris and Wimbledon but was defeated by Serena in Flushing Meadows. This stat is an example of what is WTA nowadays - the tennis players are too inconsistent in Slams.
In women's R4, we just have 3 non-seeded players. US Open preview
This is my first post in english. I'd like to test my capacities, and some of my followers in Twitter asked me to do it. And I love writing in english, by the way.
Well, the USO draw was finally released. Nole is on Federer's half (as he were in all Slams this year) and Ana is on Wozniacki's half - which isn't such a big deal for many players, considering Caro's shape in Slams - and also in Serena's one.
Novak starts playing against a qualifier; he can meet Davydenko or Dodig in R3; Karlovic or Gasquet in R4 (or even Frederico Gil, another tough player); and Berdych or Monfils in quarter-finals.
It's an easy draw, in my opinion. None top-5 players on Nole's way till semis, and just 2 top-10 ones to possible meeting in quarters.
About Ana, she starts against the russian Ksenia Pervak; then, she can possible meet Cetkovska in the next round (that Cetkosvka who defeated her in Wimbledon 2 months ago); Sharar Peer in R3; Azarenka or Serena in R4 (or maybe her fellow Bojana Jovanovski); and Jankovic (another fellow) or Schiavone in quarter-finals.
It's a tough draw, but Ana can perfectly reach the 2nd week (4th round). That's all I can hope, I'm not expecting her to reach the quarters considering her recent shape. But I hope she can surprises me.
About men's competition, I don't find a favorite. Nole is the one playing better this year, he's being stunning and already won 2 Slams. However, his injury in Cincinnati could influence his campaign... or not, I hope. Then we have Rafa, who is the current champion and wants to have the 1st place back again. And, of course, Roger Federer. He will always be the 16 times-winner of Grand Slams, and he wants to prove he's not finished yet. In fact, I truly believe this is his last chance of winning a Slam. And if he does, he'd become the 1st player ever winning Slams in 9 different years!
Speaking about women's, my favourites are Serena, Masha and Caro. Serena seems to be back on her best shape, and plays "at home". Then, we have Masha that won in Cincinnati and was runner-up in Wimbledon; maybe the tennis player in a better shape, from top-10. And then Caro, which is the number 1 (she is, it's a fact) and will also be considered as a candidate. Ténis português
Agora que estive uns dias fora, aproveitei para descansar e praticar um desporto de que gosto, o ski aquático. Mas, ao mesmo tempo, tive uma conversa que me deixou a pensar sobre a situação do ténis português.
Um dos argumentos do senhor com quem discutia era que o ténis português era uma miséria, e deu dois exemplos: o da Bielorrúsia, a que ele chamou um país de m****, que tem uma tenista no top-5; e o de uma neta dele, esquiadora, que está classificada como 11ª no ranking mundial do escalão dela, e que não tem apoios de lado nenhum. Já agora, gostava de louvar esta rapariga, de nome Marta Simões. Com poucos apoios, num país onde o desporto é muito pouco divulgado, está às portas do top-10 mundial e neste momento a disputar os europeus de categoria (foi segunda classificada no ano passado).
Mas voltando ao ténis (e muito do que vou aqui escrever será parafraseado da pessoa com a qual tive essa conversa); mais do que a falta de apoios do estado e as fracas condições de treino, o nosso maior problema é a dedicação. O corpo humano é igual em todas as pessoas, ou os espanhóis são uma espécie mais avançada?!
Os nossos tenistas são poucos dedicados; não tomam o ténis como uma competição, mas como um "passatempo" (em termos de empenho, claro). Dedicam-se a fazer uma boa época de terra batida, onde chegam ao top-75 (o nosso melhor, não dá pra mais...) e depois na época de HC caem no ranking.
É esse o problema. Falta dedicação, motivação. Claro que neste país só se liga ao futebol, praticamente, mas é preciso apostar mais no ténis. E ter tenistas em grande, a nível internacional, é meio caminho andado para a valorização do desporto a nível nacional.
Se alguém quiser comentar, quer seja para concordar ou discordar, sinta-se à vontade. O símbolo do lápis é mesmo para isso.

Pré-US Open
A preparação da maioria dos tenistas para o último Slam da época acabou hoje, com as finais do torneio de Cincinnati (Canadá). A final masculina foi disputada entre o nº1 mundial. Novak Djokovic, e o 4º melhor tenista, Andy Murray. A final feminina foi disputada por duas ex-nº1 mundiais; a sérvia Jelena Jankovic e a russa Maria Sharapova, finalista em Wimbledon há 2 meses.
Quanto à final feminina, ganhou a Maria Sharapova, como eu queria. A russa venceu a Jankovic pelos parciais de 4-6 7-6 6-3.
Bem, e o Nole perdeu mesmo. Não entrou muito bem no jogo, começou por ser quebrado e ainda fez o contra-break para empatar a 3-3. No entanto, foi quebrado de novo no jogo seguinte, acabando por perder 6-4. Djokovic ainda foi subindo de nível ao longo do set, mas talvez devido a lesão no ombro (sem tirar mérito ao Murray, que jogou muito bem) não conseguiu contrariar o melhor britânico da actualidade.
No segundo set, mais do mesmo. Nole começa por ser quebrado, Murray confirma, Murray quebra e o sérvio acaba por desistir. Andy Murray venceu o torneio de Cincinnati pelos parciais de 6-4 3-0, o seu segundo título nesta temporada (depois de Queens).
E assim acaba a série de 16 vitórias consecutivas do Djokovic. Neste ano, o nº1 ganhou 57 jogos e perdeu apenas 2. 9 títulos, entretanto. Uma época simplesmente surreal.
Espero que recupere bem para o US Open. Da última vez que ele perdeu um jogo (sem ser hoje, ou seja, na meia-final de Roland Garros), ganhou o torneio seguinte - um Slam. Ajde Nole!
A final feminina não vi. Quer dizer, só os últimos 3 jogos, ganhos pela Sharapova. Vi-a a jogar com uma grande garra, característica dela, e uma JJ esforçada mas não o suficiente.
Bom ver a Masha a manter a boa forma, depois da final em Wimbledon. É das minhas principais favoritas para o US Open. Quanto à Jelena, depois de ter perdido todos os jogos entre Roland Garros e este torneio, também estou feliz por ela. Mais uma candidata que chega ao US com confiança elevada.
